How to make money from your Instagram
Social media has
completely changed the way we live our lives. It’s also changed the way we work
– just a decade ago it would have been unimaginable to make a careers by just
posting pictures from our day-to-day routine.
So what does it take to actually be an influencer? The ideal
home? The perfect partner? The glamorous job? Well, none of them actually. All
you need to do is get in the game and work it, for all is never what it seems –
just as Anna Kendrick’s vlogger character Stephanie discovers in deliciously
dark new thriller A Simple Favour. So here we reveal how you can become an
inspiration on Instagram – even if your life is far from flawless…
A Jack of all trades is famously rubbish at mastering any of
them, so don’t muddy your message by randomly posting about your cat one day
and avo on toast the next.
While being niche is never the best way to find mainstream
success, in the land of the ‘gram it’s the opposite – find your topic and stick
with it. Whether you like saving turtles on the weekends off, are mad for drag
queen memes or just ruddy love ‘90s fashion, stick to your Instagram guns.
Then get those thumbs working – search hashtags that match
your outlook and start throwing hearts out left and centre to get people
checking out your account and hopefully following you in return.
Be picky with posts
No one wants to see pictures of your sad lunchtime salad,
Brenda – that’s what your Insta-stories are for.
Don’t waste your grid on lacklustre posts that don’t have a
hope in MySpace of bringing home the likes. No matter what your life is like,
you can find content anywhere you go (every coloured wall is an opportunity to
shine!) so, even if you holiday once a year, snap away relentlessly and save
them up for a rainy #throwbackthursday.
Work your followers
While your grandparents will guffaw at the idea that you
have 1,000 people interested in your dinner (get a life, Nan cries), you
actually have to give and take with your online followers as you do your
friends and family. It’s no good uploading and sitting back expecting everyone
to flock to your content, you have to work it! So follow sites you’re
interested in, like and comment on posts your followers share and reply to
anyone who takes time to write on your posts. Loyalty goes a long way.
Food porn
Food, glorious, food. Does anyone not like a lip-smacking
snap? Whether you’re ripping open a jam-packed doughnut in slow-mo or going
nuts over an almond milk macchiato, there’s food for thought for everyone who
wants to build a fan base with pics of grub.
The rule to sharing food Instas is simple: find the right
light, set up the table to look pretty (no used napkins allowed), and snap from
above. Oh, and don’t forget your hashtags – #foodporn brings up a staggering
175 MILLION posts on Instagram.
Fashion, darling
Social media has made us a showy bunch; we either like to
display how much we have or brag about what a bargain we’ve just found. So what
better way to get the followers on your personal front row than by sharing
style shots and tips? You don’t even have to be in the shot (more points for
nailing the “looking for my contact lense pose” though), you can just lay out a
killer outfit on your bed and tag the brands. The main purpose with fash snaps
is to be aspirational – you want your followers to want your things. Simple.
Filter your options
No, we don’t mean turning yourself into a dog (so passé).
Making someone stop and like your content is a skill in itself – how many of us
mindlessly scroll through social media without even absorbing what people are
posting? And to grab the zombie nation’s attention you have to stand out.
Normal social media filters are rather clichéd now and can be spotted a mile
off so get appy and make and investment.
Successful instagrammers are all using programs such as
Lightroom or VSCO to perfect their images before posting. These filters allow
them to create sharper images and bring out essential colours and make them the
focus of the image. The picture perfect life is easy, if you know where the
secrets are buried….
